Hartford, Connecticut: Once home to the likes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe, the state capitol now boasts another noteworthy name: six-piece indie rock band Bronze Radio Return.
Never heard of 'em? Think again. From high-profile placements in films like last year's St. Vincent (starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy) to commercials (Nissan, Starbucks) and TV shows, the group's infectious brand of what's been called "one part indie dance party and another part roots rock laced with a pop sensibility" has been infiltrating the mainstream for a while now.
They're back at it with a new album, Light Me Up, and supporting tour, which kicked off yesterday in Pittsburgh. The record was recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, Texas, where the band lived and worked for three weeks, creating six new songs with producer Chad Copelin (Ben Rector, BRONCHO, Sufjan Stevens). The tracks were eventually mixed by F. Reid Shippen (Lady Antebellum, Ingrid Michaelson) and Mark Needham (The Killers, Imagine Dragons) and after a few more additions resulted in this album, praised as a "rousing, cinematic soundscape."
The band's name, by the way, refers to a special item from lead singer Chris Henderson's childhood. "I learned a lot about music from listening to this beautiful, old bronze tube radio that my dad had," he says. "Everyone in the band shares a similar lineage of being influenced by the music we grew up with. We all figuratively had our own Bronze radio. It's a return of our inspirations and collective interpretation of it."
