Bruno Mars' new album Unorthodox Jukebox is out now, and the singer talks about the new songs, the inspiration for the album and about his dual gig hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live earlier this fall in the holiday issue of Paper. He is the cover boy.
Some choice quotes from the piece:
On the hard partying that serves as inspiration for Jukebox: "You're going out every night. You're drinking every night, being young... looking for love in all the wrong places."
On his new songs: "[They] definitely might be darker, a little more aggressive. I'm saying some things that are probably going to open a lot of those doors."
On his stint as host and musical guest on SNL: "To this day we don't know why that happened. I was skeptical. Everyone was skeptical...I signed up to go down in flames. It's like if you don't do this, you wasn't made for this shit if you can't take on something like that. So it was kind of a challenge. It was like, 'Fuck it, let's go.'"
On his 2010 arrest: "I know once you put it on record, it's on record -- forever...It's weird because it's easier for me to sit down and write a song than actually talk about it."
On signing with Motown -- his first record label: "I felt like they just signed me and shelved me. You have no money and you're trying to figure out what happens, and then I got the phone call saying, you know, 'I think it's best that we go our separate ways.'"
