Camryn's on her way to being pop's next big thing.
With an impressive voice, irresistible songs, and true panache of her own, she comes to life on her new single "Now or Never". However, she really turns it up on stage. She's toured with One Direction and she'll be back at it with the English boys on November 30 and December 1 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. You've got to see her…
ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino caught up with Camryn about "Now or Never", playing with One Direction, and so much more in this exclusive interview.
What's the story behind "Now or Never"?
I didn't really have a strong dance song. That was missing from my setlist and singles. We really wanted a strong dance song with a good message that everybody could relate to. I'm sure everybody has that feeling of, "Come on! It's now or never. I need you to do something because we don't know what's going to happen tomorrow so make your move now!" That's what the song's about. Once we started writing it, everything came together.
Where did it begin?
It came from the beat first. Everybody contributed to the lyrics. We brought all of our ideas to the table and mashed them up to see what we could come up with.
Has "Now or Never" already inspired more songs?
I just recorded a song last night! It's called "Make Your Move". It's like "Now Or Never". The song basically says, "Hey, I know you like me. You know I like you. So, it's up to you to make the move!" They're completely different in a sense though.
What was your favorite memory from touring with One Direction?
My favorite moment probably would've been meeting them. I'm not going to lie [Laughs]. Those guys are so cool. They're exactly how they act on camera and on radio. You can tell they're best friends and they have fun with what they do. It's great to see that. Other than that, I loved performing to their huge amount of fans and those very big crowds. It was the first time I'd ever performed in huge arenas like that. It was really terrifying and amazing at the same time!
Any chance of a collaboration?
I don't know! I have to get to know them a little bit better but hopefully in the future!
What city or state has really stood out for you?
Actually, Texas overall has been really good to me. When I was doing a middle school tour, I went to a school in Houston. They were so crazy and ready to have fun! It was probably the best show. They all had signs, and they were all wild. It was so amazing. I've really held on to that moment. Ever since then, Texas has been awesome.
Who are you listening to now?
I'm listening to everybody who's good on the radio like The Lumineers, Ke$ha, Rihanna, and all of the usual suspects. Some of the big artists I listened to when I was little were Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne, and Gwen Stefani. They're still influences! I've gotten to see how they've changed and what they've done.
Do you get to interact with your Twitter and Facebook followers?
I love social networking and connecting with my fans. A lot of them are in Asia or parts of the world I may not get to go all the time. It's great to connect with them through those sites.
Have you heard Camryn yet?
