The best way to get to know Carmen Electra is to listen to her brand new single, "I Like It Loud".
The song proves to be as fiery and feisty as she is. It's a sharp, seductive, and slick anthem with a little humor and a lot of heart. Electra's had quite the illustrious career to date from TV to film to magazine covers. However, "I Like It Loud" might just be the best introduction to who she really is…
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Carmen Electra talks "I Like It Loud" [Featuring Bill Hamel], her biggest musical influences, who she'd love to work with in the studio and so much more.
What's the story behind "I Like It Loud"?
Back in the day, I worked with Prince. I grew up as a dancer, and I always wanted to perform and be on stage. I got a little taste of it back then. My career went in so many directions, which is great. I loved every moment of it. Deep down inside, I've had this burning desire to try music again, but it was never quite the right situation and the right timing. Nothing really lined up the right way. Recently, I met Orlando Puerta from Citrusonic, and he believed in me. I started listening to tracks, and "I Like It Loud" was the first one I recorded. Bill Hamel sent it, and I was blown away. I wanted to be quiet about it though [Laughs]. When you love something so much and really want to do it, there can be a lot of fear. It was the time to just go for it and see what happens. I was really grateful for the support because it's been so cool. I'm very happy!
Did you always want to do dance music?
I wanted to get back into dance and dance music. I also wanted to have that interaction with people. When I was hosting on MTV, I loved that energy you got from being right there and that feeling. I really miss that. It's a fun time. Honestly, we were just trying to do something that was in my heart. It's about having fun. It's a party song.
What artists shaped you?
Well, overall, and I'm sure this is true for almost everybody who's into dance, imaging, fashion, and the whole package, I'd have to say Madonna. From the beginning to now, how can you not be inspired from everything she's accomplished? She's never cared what anyone thinks and gotten over so many hurdles and just pushed and pushed. To me, that's the most inspiring thing. From the time of her Sex book, there's an amazing video I have. I'm so inspired by that. As a woman, she affected me the most. She pushed boundaries in every way. In her early career, she was a nude model. I can relate to that because of Playboy. She didn't care; she just followed her heart. To not listen to anyone and do what you want to do no matter what is inspiring.
Do acting, singing, dancing, and hosting all come from a different creative place for you?
Absolutely! I guess they all connect at some point. You put out that sexy image, and I always wanted that. It still ties in with everything. It's all going to change at some point, but it feels like a new time in my life. I love it all. I get really bored, so everything serves a purpose in a way. I have ADD [Laughs].
Do you have other songs ready to go for an album?
I've recorded two. We're getting remixes and listening to them now. People have been really supportive. I'm pulling it all in and feeling the love. Right now, I'm in the process of getting a live show together for the single. We're figuring out the look. I've realized the image and look is just as important as the music. I'm excited about the creative process. I wanted something that makes me move, and I wanted to be able to dance a little bit. I've had fun working on it and getting into that creative space. I love that! A lot of times, you don't have any control when you're doing other projects. They have control over how they want you to look or how they want you to do something. With music, you get to go deeper in the creative process. I'm just going with the flow.
This is probably the best way for people to get to know you.
Yeah, I just wanted it to be an energetic, fast, and danceable track with personality. We released it in a really natural way, and it's been crazy in a good way.
Who are you listening to right now?
I love Azealia Banks! I love "212"! I'm so honored by the mashups of "I Like It Loud" and "212" because I went crazy for that song when I first heard it. The dream for me would be able to work with Skrillex. I love that dubstep and electronic dance music. It's my passion. Kaskade would be really cool too.
Dance music has come back too. It's almost like when you first started doing music back in the day.
There's a whole generation that doesn't really know about that side of me. I'm not coming into this like I have to prove something though. A handful of people are rooting for me. This is what makes me happy so I have to do that and follow it.
What's next for you?
We've been in rehearsals. I found two amazing dancers who are fantastic. I'm putting everything together for the single. The first live performance is in New York premiering the single.
