Cher Announces Broadway Musical Based On Her Life
Thu, 08 Jun 2017 08:59:50
In what may be prove to be one of the sharpest moves in biographical theatre history, Cher is bringing her life to Broadway. The singer announced the news via Twitter, saying, "Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There will be performance in theatre with actors, dancers, singers. It'll be on Broadway 2018."
The show is being produced by Hamilton's Jeffrey Seller and Flody Suarez. Jason Moore, who previously directed the stage musical Avenue Q as well as the popular movie Pitch Perfect, is directing the show.
"Cher: The Musical" was written by Rick Elice of "Jersey Boys" fame, and chronicles Cher's life. It starts with her hardscrabble childhood in Los Angeles, where her mother was a waitress. Cher always knew she wanted to be famous, and as a teenager got a job as a backup singer. She met Sonny Bono in 1962, and the musical shows how they climbed their way to the top of the music business, later becoming household names with "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" on television. After their 1975 divorce, Cher reinvented herself as a pop icon and movie star. The songs in "Cher: The Musical" are all from Cher's catalog.
There is no exact date as to when the musical will make its official debut and which theatre it will be at, however it looks like it'll be taking place at some point in 2018. Which gives us just enough time to brush up on our Cher budkcatalog.
