This week there's plenty to reflect upon in the world of album releases. The Rolling Stones - a classic act in their own right - rifle through some classic blues covers and bring a vitality to source material, while putting some strut back into their sound. Jean-Michel Jarre returns with the final installment of his Oxygene trilogy with a melancholic sound that echos the past whilst stands facing the futurism with which his work was once synonymous. Childish Gambino puts facts into rhymes and flows with natural ease through one of the most eagerly awaited albums of the year. John Legend discusses pretty much every subject under the son, and Deadmau5 delivers bleeps, twists and surprises.
Of course, we've missed some great contenders for this week's top selection of exciting tunes - but below we have listed the albums that exceed expectations and deliver more than the goods.
The Rolling Stones - "Blue & Lonesome" - Interscope Records
With Blue & Lonesome The Rolling Stones return to their roots, and in doing so they reconnect with a vitality and sense of urgency that was last heard in their recordings from the 1970's. Taking classic, sometimes lesser-known blues tracks, and passing them through the indefatigable filter of Mick, Keith and the boys' sense of space and phrasing has produced an extraordinary album.
Deadmau5 - "W://2016Album" - mau5trap Recordings Limited
A month ago, when Deadmau5 announced the release date of his new album one fan Tweeted that he hoped that tracks would be "more relaxed instead of getting seizures from light shows". The producer/DJ/artist responded with "I'm actually considering writing a new album this next 2 months off of just that… I think I already have a title in mind." The tunes are what you'd expect from the mouse-headed man, but there are surprises and contrasts to what has gone before.
John Legend - "Darkness & Light" - Columbia Records
John Legend returns with an album that deals with his new status as a father, his concerns of racism in America, and the world. There's a sense of immediacy to the lyricism, as if surfing the zeitgeist Legend is keen to add his voice (throwing in some of this best vocal performances) to the debate of issues that affect us all, and that are felt by anyone with a heart, here, Legend may wear his on his sleeve, but his transparency and sometimes awkwardness in addressing the issues make for a more interesting, human scale experience.
Jean-Michel Jarre - "Oxygene 3" - Columbia Records
Jean-Michel Jarre's debut album Oxygene was released in 1976 and remains the best-selling French album of all time. The artist who became synonymous with overstated live shows and extravagances beyond measure returns with a 40-year anniversary tribute, and the third installment of his trilogy with a beautiful, minimalist piece of work. The album is great in that it stands alone whilst also making references to the original works that first inspired devotion from music lovers around the world.
Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!" - Glassnote Records
What must be one of the most eagerly awaited albums in recent months, "Awaken, My Love!" brings further evidence that speaks to the abilities of Donald McKinley Glover, better known as Childish Gambino. A sharpness of continuity plays out across an album that's populated with all the understated tricks that Gambino has in his arsenal. With the promise of a limited vinyl release, this is a guaranteed stocking-filler for those who beat the crowds - for those that don't… there are the usual digital and download options.
