Cody Simpson "Preview To Paradise" Review — 4.5 out of 5 stars

On Preview To Paradise, Cody Simpson solidifies himself as a paradigm for modern pop.
Now, the four-song EP—out June 12—illuminates every facet of this dynamic, diverse, and debonair young showman. Whether it's the sunny shimmering acoustic hum of "Got Me Good" or the dance floor anthem "Wish U Were Here" [Featuring Becky G], Simpson pulls everything off with a personal panache unlike any of his peers. Simpson's got a potent set of pipes that resounds perfectly over the Jack Johnson-style strumming of "Got Me Good". The verses show a sharp sense of humor—"Word on the street is that you're single, so baby have you heard my single?"—while the hook is so sweet you'll be singing it for days. Most notably, his voice particularly shines amidst the organic instrumentation and lithe bounce of the production.
On the other end of the spectrum, "Wish U Were Here" could pipe through any one of the world's hottest night clubs alongside the newest Black Eyed Peas or David Guetta jam. The fact Simpson can seamlessly hit both ends of the pop spectrum truly separates him. He's also not afraid to do things differently most notably on "So Listen", which features everyone's favorite Rappa Ternt Sanga, T-Pain. "Gentleman" leaves off with another soulful acoustic poem from Simpson, and it's an a propos ending.
Simpson is everything that a 21st century star should be. He's not afraid to push the envelope, and he does it with undeniable cool. This is essential summer listening, and it truly is the perfect prelude to his upcoming full-length Paradise due later this year.
