Coldplay & The Chainsmokers, Passion Pit, & Arca Shine In Top Songs Of The Week - February 24
Thu, 23 Feb 2017 13:32:40
The second to last week of the shortest month of the year provided us with some of the finest songs of 2017 so far. A number of HUGE collaborations have been teased in the last few weeks, but it was Coldplay and The Chainsmokers who came through first, dropping their news song "Something Just Like This", and performing it for the first time live at the BRIT Awards. They weren't the only two big names to team up, however. Walter Martin, formerly of The Walkmen, and The National's Matt berninger got together to create a joyous new track, "Hey Matt".
Speaking of songs that begin with "Hey," Passion Pit has shared seven new songs in the past week, and on Tuesday we got to hear their new slow jam "Hey K". Meanwhile, indie darlings Whitney took part in a Spotify Session and recorded a cover of the Bob Dylan classic "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You". And that was only the beginning for a week filled with stunning new songs.
Here are our favorites:
Coldplay & The Chainsmokers — "Something Just Like This"
The Chainsmokers may have been one of the biggest artists of 2016, but by teaming up with Coldplay they have entered a new stratosphere. The song is sure to be one of the biggest of the year, and will be heard everywhere from the radio to the dancefloor.
Whitney — "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" (Bob Dylan Cover)
Whitney came out of nowhere last year with their Light Upon the Lake LP, which was one of the finest albums of the summer. During their performances, the group have regularly been covering Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You". Luckily for fans and Spotify users, the band finally sat down and cut a recording of it.
Walter Martin — "Hey Matt" (ft. Matt Berninger)
Walter may not have been able to find a friend in Randy Newman, but luckily he was able to get a little help from The National's Matt Berninger. There was a time when The Walkmen and The National were two of the biggest bands in the indie scene. Now, The Walkmen are no more, and The National haven't released an album since 2013, but doesn't stop the appeal of the Walter Martin and Matt Berninger track "Hey Matt". It's a joyous, natural novelty track that is sure to make you press replay immediately after first listen.
Arca — "Piel"
Arca is releasing a new album on April 7th, and this week we got to hear it's first track — featuring his voice for the first time. Here is what Arca had to say about the upcoming album, "Here's my voice and all my guts: feel free to judge it. It's like a bullfight: you're watching emotional violence for pleasure. So this is a character who, almost as a mockery of the transaction, goes uncomfortably deep, into self-mutilation. 'You want gore? Here's gore.'"
Passion Pit — "Hey K"
Passion Pit has shared seven new songs in the past week, but it's the echoing slow jam "Hey K" that caught our ears. It's got indie type emotions, but with a sound more likely linked to an expensively produced pop/hip hop record, giving it a unique feel.
