Controversial Nina Simone Biopic Starring Zoe Saldana Unveils First Trailer

The Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana has released its first trailer for the upcoming motion picture entitled Nina. The movie has been under fire ever since revealing its first poster with the actress in blackface. The Cynthia Mort directed movie is set to be released in theatres and on VOD on April 22nd.
2015's Nina Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? was nominated for Best Documentary at this year's Oscars, but lost to the Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy. Lisa Simone Kelly, Simone's daughter, was an executive producer on the project and "has publicly distanced herself from the project," according to Pitchfork.
Kelly told The Huffington Post, "I love (Zoe Saldana) as an actress. Truly, I do, but not all people are meant to play certain parts. The energy and the name behind this project is Cynthia Mort. She's the writer, she's the director, she's the one who came up with the concept. And she's the one who set this whole thing in motion. And it has been full of non-truth since its inception. And the addition of Zoe Saldana to the casting -- for me -- was only a further example of how much this project really just veered away from what the truth was."
Simone's estate has refused to endorse the film, and Saldana's casting has been heavily criticized since she was announced in the leading role.
