Country Singer Chely Wright Said Coming Out Harmed Her Career

From our "What a Bum Out files: Out country singer Chely Wright, who publicly announced that she is lesbian in May via a profile in People, has reflected on the decision and its not-so-uplifting repercussions. Wright revealed to Auto Straddle, a lesbian pop culture blog, that her life and livelihood were threatened as a result of her choice to come out.
Wright admitted that after publicly revealing her sexuality, her album sales were cut "directly in half." She also said that telling the world about her sexual orientation brought about a barrage of death threats. Death threats? Really? Come on, Wright fans. Isn't that a little over-the-top and unnecessary?
"It didn't help my career," she said. "If it appears from the outside that it's helped my career, it could be because I haven't talked about the negative. You won't hear me bitching and moaning on my Facebook about the hate mail I've gotten. My life has been threatened. I get nasty letters every day, 'I'm through with you Chely Wright, you're going to hell.' In coming out I had a feeling that it would diminish my wage earning, and that feeling was correct. And, I am fine with that."
What a bum out!
Are you a Chely Wright fan regardless of her sexuality? Did her coming out change your opinion of her music? It shouldn't!
