Country singer Chely Wright has come out of the closet as a lesbian, according to People. "There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality," she told the popular celeb publication. "I wasn't going to be the first." That makes total sense, but Wright eventually changed her perspective and elected to come out, loud and proud of her orientation. She also told People that "nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out.” Congrats to Wright on her courageous decision. Maybe she can hang out with Ricky Martin now that they are both out and proud.
Wright also told the mag about growing up in the South, saying, "I don't have a memory in my life that doesn't include the dream of making music." She hid her sexuality as her star ascended in the country music scene. The singer-songwriter, who is 39-years-old, has won both an Academy of Country Music and a Country Music award. Her memoir, Like Me, is out this week. So is her first album in half-a-decade, Lifted off the Ground. What a great way to promote new materials with a wave of publicity revealing a hot potato topic.
Who is your favorite country singer? What do you think of Wright's decision to come out? Does it make you more interested in her music?
