Back in March Newmarket Studios shared a teasing photograph of Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, who had been down under seemingly working on something together. Hopes and speculation from peers and fans was strong, and it seemed to make sense that two of indie-rock's brightest artists would be in room together developing a track or two. However, it seems that the reality of things has far exceeded the hopes of fans — because now Vile and Barnett have announced a North American tour and a new collaborative record.

The album, recorded in 8 days over the span of 15 months, will be released later this via Mom & Pop, Matador, Marathon Artists, and Milk!.

Speaking about the collaborative efforts Barnett said, "In 2014 I scored a support slot opening for Kurt at the Abbotsford Convent [outside Melbourne]. We met briefly after the show but I was a bit nervous and didn't wanna bother him, just grateful for the gig. Years later we started bumping into each other on the festival circuit all around the wide world and we became friends. He hit me up when he was coming to Melbourne next and said he thought we could work together."

Echoing the mutual admiration Vile sees things similarly; "I love all her music but the song that really hit me was "Depreston" — I know it's popular but her voice is so good in that song and it's so pretty and sincere... i'm a sucker for that kinda song: instant classic."

Barnett added, "Smoke Ring was one of my first purchases on vinyl. I was getting over a big break-up, unemployed and drifting and I would just lie on my bed and listen to 'Peepin' Tom' on repeat. One of the most beautiful and luscious albums I ever heard. Me and Jen fell in love to that album."

Backing the duo will be an outfit called the Sea Lice — a band of strong pedigree whose players are Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), and Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts).

As well as doing the right thing in releasing an album that indie rock fans deserve, the duo are extending their kindness, they have partnered with Plus 1 to donate $1 from each tour ticket sold to the ACLU.
