Courtney Barnett has won the Australian Music Award, and as part of her prize she received $30,000 Australian, about $22,450 American. Barnett beat out Tame Impala, Royal Headache, Methyl Ethel, and Dick Diver for the award. Henry Rollins presented her with the award, which she one for her 2015 album Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit (Marathon Artists). The Australian Music Award is an annual honor given to an album made by an Australian artist.
According to Triple J, Barnett told the audience, "I respect so many Australian artists so to be picked as the one that wins is pretty amazing. Plus, I've never had a novelty cheque before - I'm a bit nervous to hold it. One thing I like about this award, it's judged on the art and the music and it's not on sales or other boring shit like that; so thanks."
Courtney Barnett is currently on tour in Australia. After her March 20th show in Eumundi, Australia, she will take a three-and-a-half week break before heading to North America, where she will play a variety of festivals and smaller venues through the beginning of June. Stops include two shows at Coachella, and festival appearances at New York, New York's Governors Ball, Austin Texas' Leviathan, and Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She will also be playing in Chicago, Montreal, and Denver amongst others. For more on Courtney Barnett, check out:
