The Cramps’ publicist has confirmed the death of Lux Interior, the band’s lead singer since their formation in the ‘70s. Interior (real name: Erick Lee Purkhiser) passed away from a preexisting heart condition on Wednesday after being admitted to a hospital in Glendale, CA. He was 60.

Best known as “psychobilly” pioneers, the Cramps were crucial members of the CBGB’s punk scene that gave birth to such groups as the Ramones. Their blend of surf guitar hooks and rockabilly riffs was very much a Cramps trademark, however (see such campy classics as “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” and “Bikini Girls With Machine Guns,” which could be considered bass-free precursors to the Black Lips and White Stripes).

The Cramps’ last disc was a rarities collection called How to Make a Monster. It came out in 2004—25 years after their breakthrough EP, Gravest Hits.
