Crazy Eddie Antar burned himself into pop culture history for wacky commercials in which he bellowed, "Crazy Eddie's Prices are Insane!" Antar will be immortalized in a forthcoming biopic, Crazy Eddie, which will be directed by Danny DeVito. The script is currently being written and will focus on how Eddie went on to launch his famous consumer electronics chain, which ballooned to 43 stores. Antar's off-camera life was colorful, as he was eventually imprisoned for fraud.
DeVito secured the rights to the story and will produce the film, which is being financed by two businessmen who grew up around the corner from the first store that Antar opened in their hometown of Brooklyn.
Once Antar's company's stock was opened up to the public, he started to skim off the top and falsified his inventory to inflate his stock value. When the company fell victim to a hostile takeover, Antar went on the run and sought safe harbor in Israel, where he had transferred significant sums of money. He was extradited three years later, thrown in jail, and fined $150 million.
DeVito has received the cooperation of Antar and his associates and will seek to modernize the story and draw parallels to the current Wall Street financial crisis.
