Daughtry "Break the Spell" — 4 out of 5 stars

DAUGHTRY is like pop's equivalent of The Dark Knight.
His latest album, Break the Spell, sees the singer shifting from irresistible crooning to anthemic rock faster than Bruce Wayne morphing into Batman. That's why it's such a deep modern rock offering. He bursts out of the gates with the distortion-driven "Renegade", which revs up once the massive stadium-ready refrain kicks in. Daughtry sounds powerful and potent, exhibiting a level of both intimacy and inimitability. You can practically see an action scene exploding along to this anthem.
The keyboard and acoustic intro of "Crawling Back to You" gives way to another irresistible hook that's both vulnerable. "Outta My Head" snaps into attack formation on the command of a groove-y riff stomp complete with some wah-ed out jamming as Daughtry slides through the verse with panache. On the other end of the spectrum, the acoustic hum of "Crazy" sees our hero at his rawest and most real as he lets out pensive and poetic lyrics. "Louder Than Ever" lives up to its title, illuminating just how badass Daughtry can get when the amps are turned up to 11.
Everything reaches heavenly heights on the rocket fuel of album finale "Spaceship". It's an elegant ending to a rollicking roller coaster of a rock record. Unlike Bruce Wayne, Daughtry was never hiding his superpower, but he hones it immensely on his third and best offering yet.
It's no surprise that "Drown In You" was one of the best tunes on the Batman: Arkham City video game soundtrack…he's got a lot in common with DC's main man in black.
