Director David Fincher, who just received an Oscar nomination for Best Director for his work in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, is experiencing difficulties with another project, Torso. Paramount has let their rights option for the film lapse, despite having had the film on the studio slate since January of 2006. The project is a crime thriller based on a graphic novel about Eliot Ness in his post-Al Capone days in the Treasury Department.
Apparently, Paramount let its option lapse because it wasn't prepared to shell out a substantial amount of cash to purchase the rights outright, an indication that Hollywood is not immune to the country's current economic crisis. The studio still owns the screenplay, but may broker a new option with the comic book's writers, to whom the rights reverted after the lapse. Fincher remains attached to Torso, which is a passion project for him, despite the rights and finance issues.
