David Gordon Gets His Freak On

David Gordon Green, director of last summer's The Pineapple Express, has agreed to direct the horror thriller Freaks of the Heartland for Overture Films. Green will produce alongside Dark Horse Entertainment's Mike Richardson. The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name, which was written by Steve Niles, who also wrote 30 Days of Night. Niles will also executive produce.

The graphic novel on which the film is based is part of a six-part series which launched in 2004. The story revolves around a horrible secret harbored by a rural Middle American town. Lead character Trevor Owens has to protect his six-year-old brother, who is a "monster." The boys are also surrounded by the town's other freaks.
