Demi Lovato's new documentary, Simply Complicated, premiered on YouTube on Tuesday, and has already racked up over 2.5 million views. Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the revealing film features extensive interviews with the singer and pop star, chronicling in detail the full extent of the addictions that have threatened to ruin her life since the age of 8.
A previous documentary, released in 2012, followed Lovato after a stint in rehab after she assaulted a back-up dancer who had reportedly snitched about a hardcore party that featured extensive drug use. Being treated for an eating disorder, drug use, and self harm appeared to help, as she promoted a new life of sobriety and acceptance. Turns out, though, she was secretly sneaking and using drugs the whole time.
In the new documentary, the former Disney star reveals why she chose to continue using drugs and how her original dependence on food binging and purging began. The first time she tried cocaine was while still working for Disney, "I loved it. I felt out of control with the coke the first time that I did it." Lovato felt influenced by her father, a fellow addict, saying, "I guess I always searched for what he found in drugs and alcohol because it fulfilled him and he chose that over a family."
The first rehab attempt didn't work, and Lovato admits, "I wasn't working my program. I wasn't ready to get sober. I was sneaking it on planes, sneaking it in bathrooms, sneaking it throughout the night. Nobody knew." Other vignettes include performing hungover, with the singer recalling, "I was so drunk, I vomited in the back of the car service on the way to the airport to perform on American Idol."
The moment of truth occurred when Lovato's entire staff threatened to quit if she didn't find help. "It wasn't a matter of if they're going to leave; it was they're leaving. 'There's nothing more we can do for you,'" she recalls. After turning over her cell phone, the singer began her current attempt at sobriety.
Simply Complicated sheds light on the incredible difficulties that follow the pressures of living in the public eye. Lovato appears to be in a better place now, but admits she still struggles with her eating disorders.
Selena Gomez offered Lovato support in a comment on Instagram, saying, "This was beautiful. I'm so happy for you. You always continue to be bold and real. I wish more people were like you."
