The Broad, a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles, have announced their second summer music and performance series. This year’s Summer Happenings at The Broad will feature Devendra Banhart, Jenny Hval, Xiu Xiu, Vaginal Davis, Kembra Pfahler, Afrirampo, Miho Hatori, A Place to Bury Strangers, Geneva Jacuzzi, Zebra Katz, DJ Rashida, Downtown Boys, Mecca Vazie Andrews and others.
The performers will take their thematic calling from artists such as Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as The Broad’s current exhibition, Oracle. These events fluctuate between happenings, salons and scenes and will animate important influences of the leading artists of our time.
The first program in Summer Happenings at The Broad will be Warhol Icon. The event is inspired by Nico, the German singer-songwriter, model and actress who became famous as one of Andy Warhol’s superstars in the 1960s, and will take place June 24th. The program will cover the breadth of her work from the Velvet Underground, through later synth collaborations, to her neo-folk approaches. Jenny Hval, Kembra Pfahler, Rose McDowall, Tiny Vipers and Geneva Jacuzzi will perform at the event.
The second program in Summer Happenings at The Broad will be Strange Forest. It takes its title from the work of Takashi Murakami, who has long found inspiration in the collaged cultures that emerged in Japan at the end of the Tokugawa period of isolation. Strange Forest presents artists who work with those traditional and Western influences in real-time. Devendra Banhart, former Ponytail member Dustin Wong in collaboration with Takako Minekawa, Tokiko Ihara, Afrirampo, and Oorutaichi will perform at the event.
August’s Summer Happening is inspired by themes of globalization, surveillance and the underlying systems and forces at work in the world that make up the current exhibition Oracle. Xiu Xiu and A Place To Bury Strangers will be performing.
The final Summer Happenings event will take place in September and center around Jean Michel Basquiat. The night will find where punk meets hip hop, gay meets straight, black meets white, and downtown party meets uptown art world, all influences that made Jean Michel Basquiat the man he was. Zebra Katz, Downtown Boys, DJ Rashida and Michael Stock will provide the musical element of the event.
Tickets for the upcoming events can be found on The Broad website.
With all these inspiring events in a single place, it is sure to be another amazing summer at The Broad.
