Dr. Dog to Release New Album, 'The Psychedelic Swamp'

Psychedelic indie rockers Dr. Dog have announced it will release its 15-year-old experimental cassette-only debut, The Psychedelic Swamp, as a new release next month. The album is scheduled to drop February 5 on Anti- Records.
As Vulture reports, "the Philly outfit have retooled their experimental cassette-only debut as a fully imagined studio album, comprised of the '60s-inspired psych-pop that made 2005's Easy Beat and 2007's We All Belong indie favorites. With original members of the collective in tow, the band returned to their Mt. Slippery studio for the project and, in a fit of energy, also recorded the new song "Bring My Baby Back."
The press release puts it slightly differently, claiming the album is the result of an encounter with with a man from another planet, who, in "his quest for satisfaction, found himself susceptible to hollow promises and life in the Psychedelic Swamp, a refracted reflection of reality."
However the album came to be, Consequence of Sound's analysis sounds like it's a promising effort. "'Bring My Baby Back' shows how much this album finds the band harkening back to the '60s and '70s psychedelic pop styles that filled their earlier work," writes Ben Kaye. "While B-Room largely featured shambling indie rock tunes, this taste of The Psychedelic Swamp hums across on waves of synth and drum machines like the constant buzz just above a trip. There's a sweet heartbreak in Leaman's delivery, giving credence to his emo remarks, [like] 'This song is filled with things that nobody knew what to do with but just didn't have the heart to throw away. It's like climbing out from the bottom of a junk drawer three stories deep, a veritable ascent into maelstrom.'"
Dr. Dog head out on the road January 29th, starting on the West Coast at the Observatory in Santa Ana, CA. February sees the band continue up the coast to Vancouver, and down to Tuscon on February 16, then back to SoCal. After a festival date in Okeechobee, FL, the second leg starts in Buffalo on March 9 and wends through the Northeast and Southeast ending up in Austin, Texas on April 9 before a trip through Europe.
