Drake is no stranger to breaking records. In recent months the Canadian rapper has broken Michael Jackson's record for most American Music Award nominations, he his album Views was the first album to exceed 1 billion streams on spotify, and now he's at it again.
At this year's Billboard Music Awards, which happened last night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Drake collected no less than 13 prizes — more than any other artist has won in a single year.
The record for most number of awards in a single night had previously belonged to Adele who, in 2012 won 12 Billboard Music Awards. Another record that Drake now shares with the Chainsmokers is for the number of nominations — the DJ duo received no less than 22 nominations last year — a total which Drake also reached this year.
Amongst the prizes Drake carried off on the night was the prestigious Top Artist Prize — an award that was hotly contested by Beyonce, Rihanna and Adele. He also won the award for Top Streaming Song (Audio) for his smash hit "One Dance".
Prince Jackson, the son of late Michael Jackson, handed Drake the award in Top Artist Category. On receiving the silverware Drake was joined on stage by his father, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj amongst others. "I got my whole family up here" he said.
Drake wasn't the only artist to make off with more than one prize in each hand. Coming in some way behind the rapper, but still with a healthy haul — Beyonce and Twenty One Pilots won five awards each, while the Chainsmokers, back again this year, won four.
Not only did Drake clean up in the award department he put on one hell of a show. Performing "Gyalchester" from his latest album More Views in the pond of the Bellagio Hotel and Casino there was a pyrotechnic display that blew all others out of the water.
