For those of you who haven't had enough of Ed Sheeran, you're in luck. The red-headed balladeer is set to play a small, unspecified role in the upcoming seventh season of HBO's Game of Thrones. The guest spot was revealed by the show's creators during a panel at SXSW on Sunday. Sheeran Tweeted about the news after, "Guess the cat's out the bag…"
The singer-songwriter was invited to the set as a surprise for Maisie Williams, aka Arya Stark, who is a Sheeran superfan. Creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff explained, "For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it."
This isn't the first time Game of Thrones has had a guest spot filled by a music superstar. Past artists to appear on the show have included Coldplay's Will Champion, Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody and members of Sigur Ros, Of Monsters and Men, and Mastodon.
The series creators also unveiled that the eighth and final season of the HBO supershow will only have six episodes, "From the beginning we've wanted to tell a 70-hour movie," said Benioff. "It will turn out to be a 73-hour movie, but it's stayed relatively the same of having the beginning, middle and now we're coming to the end. It would have been really tough if we lost any core cast members along the way, I'm very happy we've kept everyone and we get to finish it the way we want to."
Sheeran, meanwhile, is in the middle of touring in support of his new album ÷. His next performance is set to take place March 16th in Turin, Italy. His track "Shape of You" continues to sit at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. All in all, it's turning out to be quite the year for Mr. Sheeran, let's just hope it doesn't end up with his heading being lopped off like many of our other favorite Thrones stars.
