There's nobody in the entire universe that can pen a love song like Eddie Vedder can.
Looking back over his entire catalog with Pearl Jam, he's written some of the deepest tunes about everybody's favorite subject. "Black," "Oceans," and most recently "Just Breathe" from 2009's Backspacer all immediately come to mind. However, on the leadoff track from his forthcoming solo album, Ukulele Songs [Available May 31, 2011], Vedder opens up like never before.
With just a lilting ukulele and his unmistakable delivery, he gives the world another personal, poignant, and poetic tune that proudly stands alongside his best work.
There's an elegance to the faint ukulele strumming and hum in the background evocative of classic Americana. However, Vedder's lyrics go right to the heart. He sings, "I dream of circles perfect, eyes within your face. My heart's an open wound that only you'd replace." It's a vibrant visual that strikes a chord both sonically and lyrically. Ultimately, there's a cinematic elegance to "Longing to Belong" that elevates it to a transcendent level that'll no doubt have Pearl Jam fans and rock 'n' roll fans at large clamoring for more.
A distinct power pulsates in the final line "I may be dreaming, but I'm longing to belong to you." It's as if Vedder's dreaming for all of us, and there's no reason to ever wake up. He's got another classic on his hand, and I'm longing to hear more…
