This October marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of music industry powerhouse Elektra Records, one of the most revered labels in the history of modern music. To celebrate, Elektra will be releasing two custom digital samplers exclusively via iTunes, showcasing the company's unwavering commitment to artistic and musical excellence.
The Elektra Records Acoustic Sampler 1950-1973 and the Elektra Records Electric Sampler 1950-1973 will feature a range of classic and legendary artists from The Doors, Love, The Stooges, and MC5 to Harry Chapin, Judy Collins and The Incredible String Band. The samplers will cover the period during which label founder Jac Holzman was at the helm. Fans will be able to download both collections starting October 19. The anniversary celebration continues online with the rich, interactive website www.elektra60.com, as well as with a series of upcoming public events in the US and abroad.
Aside from the digital samplers and web presence, the company will go a step further with the anniversary festivities and will roll out a bunch of in-the-flesh activities with Holzman participating in order to fully celebrate the momentousness of the label's history and to continue to bring the label's music to fans across the world. Holzman will be appearing in New York at the 92nd Street Y on the evening of October 14. Joining Holzman for the event will be musical artists Jackson Browne and Natalie Merchant. The discussion will be moderated by longtime Patti Smith Group guitarist and music historian Lenny Kaye.
