Emily The Strange, the bangs-sporting, sassy Goth girl who has her own comic book in addition to having her image festooned on notebooks, handbags, t-shirts, flip flops, and other assorted items you can purchase at alternative culture superstores like Hot Topic, is going Hollywood. A feature film is being planned by Dark Horse Entertainment.
The Emily character was created by skateboarder Rob Reger and quickly ascended the ranks of underground counterculture to become an icon for edgy, rebellious girls. Dark Horse's Mike Richardson, who produced 30 Days of Night and the forthcoming Hellboy II: The Golden Army, will produce the Emily film.
The film will tell the backstory of Emily and her four cats in addition to introducing a whopping 13 new characters into the Emily mix. The movie will also be the basis for an Emily novel that is scheduled for release next year. It has not been decided if the film be live action, animated, or a little bit of both. Regardless, Goth girls of the world will rejoice as their heroine is elevated to yet another level on the pop culture barometer.
