Eminem vs. Kim: The Divorce, Part Two
Wed, 05 Apr 2006 16:55:03
And they said it wouldn't last! Kim and Marshall Mathers' second attempt at marriage endured a whole 82 days before their wedded bliss came to a screeching halt this week. Marshall Bruce Mathers III, a.k.a. Eminem, has filed divorce papers, citing a "breakdown in the marriage relationship" that left "no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved." Translation: "F--k you, Kim!"
That gives bragging rights to the 23% of ARTISTdirect users who gave the marriage no more than three months in a poll we ran back in January, right after Em and Kim tied the knot in a private ceremony outside Detroit, Michigan, the couple's hometown.
Kim Mathers' lawyer, Michael J. Smith, admitted that the divorce filing caught him and his client offguard. "But we have to deal with it, and we will deal with it," he told the Associated Press.
Apparently for Kim, "dealing with it" means calling in to a Detroit morning radio show to badmouth her on-again, off-again hubby. "He's having problems with, you know, his problem that he had," she told listeners, in an apparent reference to a sleep-medication dependency Em developed last summer. "I was hoping we could get counseling and work it out, you know? I don't really necessarily want to get divorced."
A day after Kim's comments, Em shot back with a statement issued through his publicist, denying that he's had any relapses since leaving drug rehab and insisting that Kim was well aware of his plans to file for divorce, despite her claim that the couple hadn't spoken for weeks prior to the divorce filing.
As part of the filing, Eminem will seek joint custody of the couple's 10-year-old daughter, Haylie, as well as the fulfillment of a prenuptial agreement, the details of which have not been disclosed. We can only hope that the prenup won't prevent Slim Shady from coming out of semi-retirement to spit more bitter, misogynistic raps like "Puke" and "Kim."
