California alternative mainstays manage to pack a whole lot of punch into powerful four-song EP!
Incubus take EP of the Week with Trust Fall (Side A) [Island Records]. In many ways, the record spans the California alternative trailblazers' entire repertoire confidently, charismatically, and comprehensively. At points, it's as if they generate the funked-up metallic buzz that made S.C.I.E.N.C.E. so groundbreaking, while incorporating the melodic mastery of 1999's breakout Make Yourself. We get the sweeping scope of A Crow Left of the Murder... and the more experimental and near-progressive leanings of Light Grenades. The band—Brandon Boyd [lead vocals], Mike Einziger [guitar], José Pasillas II [drums], Chris Kilmore [turntables, keyboards], and Ben Kenney [bass]—are simply on fire.
All said and done, they've crafted the ultimate display of their abilities within the landscape of just four songs. That's what really makes Trust Fall (Side A) so thrilling. If these four songs transfix this magnetically, there's got to be a whole host of tunes waiting to explode from their arsenal in the wings. This feels like a rebirth.
Ironically enough, things come full circle for Incubus in a few ways this summer when they join Deftones for a shed tour. They teamed up for the now-historic Back to School tour in 2000 during respective breakout moments—Incubus on Make Yourself and Deftones on White Pony.
