Dream pop gets even dreamier in the hands of this L.A.-based chanteuse
Phoebe Ryan approaches pop music from a tried-and-true singer-songwriter perspective on her debut EP, MINE [Columbia Records]. It's that mindset, which makes the EP of the Week stand out so much from the pack. You might've first heard the New Jersey-born and Los Angeles-based songstress when her sexy, slick fusion of R. Kelly's "Ignition" and Miguel's "Do You..." took off. It became a Spotify smash with over 10 million plays, and it went viral. There was nothing quite like hearing hear breathy intonation course through these modern R&B gems. Now, "Ignition/Do You..." is present on MINE, but it's just one of five gems in this pop treasure trove.
The songs like "Mine" combine equal amounts of wistfulness and wonder, tempering her transfixing vocalizations with elegant production. At the center, there's a big hook that's nearly impossible to shake as soon as it pipes through the speakers. However, it's "Dead," which shows Phoebe's breadth and scope. The lyrics prove artfully thought-provoking, while the delivery borders on trip-hop transcendence, making for something altogether different. Meanwhile, Michael Keenan's remix of "Mine" offers up a different take altogether and boasts a cameo from past collaborator Skizzy Mars, adding another dimension.

Ultimately, Phoebe brings something very different to pop music. There's a lot of ethereal, entrancing artists bubbling to the surface and seeing much success whether it's Tove Lo or Jhené Aiko. This style of heavenly melodies and production has really solidified itself at the forefront of music in the past two years. However, Phoebe does it on her own terms. She's got this lilting, lush, and lithe voice that's instantly ear-catching, and her lyrics transfix at every term. She goes deeper and brings something classic to the space. As a result, she's made one of the year's most exciting debuts.
