An auction of Eric Clapton's guitars brought in millions of dollars, with many of the axes selling well above the estimated prices.
The Associated Press reports that a 1948 Gibson L-5P sold for $82,960, well above its pre-sale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000. Overall, 75 guitars and 55 amps were sold and tallied $2.15 million in sales. Proceeds were to benefit a drug and alcohol treatment center Clapton founded in the West Indies in 1998.
An original custom-made black Fender "Eric Clapton" signature Stratocaster sold for $51,240, including the buyer's premium. It had been used during the Cream Reunion Shows in New York and London in 2005. Its pre-sale estimate was $20,000 to $30,000. A pair of 1997 Fender Twin Amps, estimated at $9,000 to $12,000. They sold for a more than triple that estimate at $42,700!
Perhaps the buyers think that playing Clapton's guitars will help a little bit of Clapton rub off on them!
Would you ever buy an Eric Clapton guitar if you had a ton of expendable income?
