Erika Jayne on Why She Will Make You Dance
Thu, 30 Dec 2010 09:06:41
Gorgeous blonde pop princess Erika Jayne, transplanted from Atlanta to LA, is enjoying another Number One on the club charts! The singer, known for her sexy vocals, infectious melodies, hot electro beats and hankering for decadence, is one of just two artists in the history of Billboard's Dance Chart to have five consecutive singles hit the top slot. It's a massive feat, one last reached by C+C Music Factory, so the deliciously sexy Miss Erika Jayne is in terrific company! Jayne's fifth single, "One Hot Pleasure," just scratched and clawed its way to the coveted and familiar numero uno slot.
For those keeping score and shaking their rumps at home, Erika Jayne has shot to number one with "Roller Coaster," "Stars," "Give You Everything" and "Pretty Mess." The dance chart tracks what's hot in the clubs and by all accounts and indications, Erika Jayne is ablaze. If there is one thing Jayne knows how to do it, it's get asses out of their seats and onto the dance floor, and she does it better than anyone out there today. Move over Lady Gaga!
ARTISTdirect.com contributor Amy Sciarretto caught up with Jayne as she was hopping a flight to San Francisco and had recently gotten the news that she was number one...again!
Congrats on reaching Number One...again! I bet that feeling never, ever gets old.
Thanks. I have had five number ones on the Billboard dance chart and I just got the call. Every single I have released has gone Number 1 on the dance chart, so today is a great day.
Clubgoers are obviously latching on to what you are doing. Why is it that you are catching on so intensely on the dance floor?
I love to dance and I want people to dance to my music. My goal is for my song to make people put their drink down and go to the dance floor. I enjoy dancing, and as soon as you hear my songs, I want you to start dancing.
This is probably a controversial question, but what is your favorite of your numbers ones? I know, it's like asking which kid is your favorite.
All of them of course. All the ones that go number one are my favorites.
Who are your biggest "classic" dance influences?
I grew up being a total fan of Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson. Those three artists impacted my life the most.
How about the current scene? Is there anyone you consider a peer or that you are just a big fan of?
There is a lot of good music going on right now in the dance and pop scenes. I love that Lady Gaga has done so well. I like to see people do well.
What can we expect from Erika Jayne in 2011?
We are releasing two EPs which I am excited about. We're collecting material for it right now. We'll do tons more shows, more videos and hopefully bring fun pop music to people who want to hear it!
How has the year been for you with performing?
I have been on the road for the last year and we have done a lot of shows. Right now, I am at my gate at the airport and am on my way to San Francisco for a show. Then I will come back to LA. I perform quite a bit. The show is me and my four extremely hot girls that back me up. I used to have five boys as my backing dancers.
Why the switch from boys to girls?
It was time to do something different, and it adds a whole different level of sex to it! The girls are awesome. If you go to my blog, you can read about the performances. I've documented so much.
How did you pick new dancers?
My creative director has had great success with female groups, like Pussycat Dolls. He handpicked them. They have worked with other artists and they so professional, and they are fabulous.
You grew up in Atlanta - what was the best thing about your Southern upbringing?
The South is so hospitable and so sweet, and the people are very kind. Besides the food and summer nights—I love them—there is so much art and so many upcoming musicians there.
How long have you been in Los Angeles?
Long enough to call it my home! [Laughs]
Anything you'd like to say before we part?
Have a safe and healthy New Year.
Have you heard Erika Jayne yet?
