British singer/rapper Estelle is the new Adele. Adele's career blew the roof off on the back of her best-selling 21, which chronicled a deep and poignant heartbreak. Now, her fellow countrywoman says her new single "Thank You," which she recorded after a recent relationship ended, nearly reduces her to tears every time she sings it.
Estelle was dating a mystery keyboard player, but they split a mere few weeks after she heard the song, written by Akon. Now, she's recorded it, and every time she sings it, the waterworks turn on.
Estelle told The Evening Standard: "My heart started pounding. My chest hurt. And guess what? Two weeks later I broke up with this guy. And now I can't sing it without crying. It's my life. It's a mess. I've never cried on stage before. But every time I sing 'Thank You,' the tears are ready to come. I'm not going to do that ugly face in public. OK, I am…" Estelle, that's so real and honest. We love it and you.
She shared more details about the relationship, saying, "When I first met him, I asked him not to mess with me. I asked him to be 100 percent with me. Please! Three years down the line, he did the exact opposite. So 'Thank You' is about growing up, turning into a woman and not being bitter. Not being angry at myself for choosing the wrong guy."
Amen, sister. A better man will come along!
Do you want to listen to "Thank You" now that Estelle shared that deep meaning?
