Exclusive Interview: Martin Garrix Looks Down With ARTISTdirect
Fri, 27 Mar 2015 04:31:48
Martin Garrix is all of 18 years old, with his next birthday coming up in May, but he is on the rise in the EDM world. "Don't Look Down," his new track with Usher, is a hit. So of course we leapt at the chance to talk to Garrix about working with the butter smooth R&B crooner, how to survive Ultra Music Festival and how he stays grounded in an eats-its-young music business.
Spill it, Garrix. What was it like working with Usher?
It was great. It was a new experience, since he is a legend. But it was great. It was interesting and it has been a great collaboration. I learned stuff production and vocal-wise. It is cool to work with someone from a different genre.
How did it happen? Did you come to him, or he to you? Was it via social media? Mutual friends or colleagues?
I had the track and he was at my manager Scooter’s house when I sent it over. Next thing I knew, I was on a FaceTime call with Usher, who said, 'I would love to do the track.' A week later, we were in the studio. It was super quick! What a coincidence, right?
You are so young. How do you handle success? How do you manage to stay grounded in this crazy business, which ages you, and fast!
I have a great team around me. They make sure everything is normal. I bring a lot of friends and family on the road with me. When I do something stupid, they tell me about it. For me, that is really helpful. It is nice, too, since I can share this crazy life, together with them.
What do you see when you look down?
When I look down, I see… you know, I don’t look down.
Because you just look up?
For me, the song is about focusing on the positive side of everything. I was looking down a lot, whenever there were 'hate' comments about my music. When I release a track, there are 100 great comments, and one bad comment, but I paid attention to the one bad comment. Why did I do that? I only focus on the good comments now. F--k that one bad comment. I keep saying that the track can be about so many different things.
Do you have any awesome non-music skills or talents?
Wind-surfing! But not that often. I used to do it a lot anymore.
What's on deck in 2015 for Martin Garrix?
Lots more music! I am working on a big show that I can tour with, hopefully. I have been in the studio with Avicii, Tiesto and Ed Sheeran
You are ready to rock the decks at Ultra Music Festival. Share one tip for surviving a music festival, since we are now headed into festival season?
The temperature is hot, so my advice to the crowd, is make sure you drink enough!
Yes, I mean water! Beer is not very smart for hydrating.
