Singer Jesse McCartney had one of the biggest hits of 2008 with the smooth, R&B-leaning, Justin Timberlake-style "Leavin'," which came out at a perfect time for JM -- when JT was busy acting and had long abandoned his music career and left it lingering on the backburner. This was pre-The 20/20 Experience and before JT's triumphant, 2013 return.
McCartney successfully filled the blue-eyed soul and blue-eyed R&B space voluntarily vacated by JT.
But McCartney was also multi-talented and had his own acting gigs. Still, even with his other interests and the pursuit of those interests, the singer was working on the follow up to Departure, which housed "Leavin'," with the single "Shake" and the album Have It All.
Then...he stepped off the grid. He wrote music. He appeared in movies. But he was not on the pop culture radar as he had been in 2008 and 2009.
McCartney took time to do his thing and decided that he would be returning when the time was right.
And now, it is right.
McCartney is back with new single "Superbad" and the album In Technicolor is out July 22. We got five minutes with the blond cutie while he stopped by NYC radio station Z100, which has been supporting him since Day One, and here's what he had to say.
Let's keep it simple, Jesse. You took some time off. You were less active in music, doing some acting. But let's talk about NOW. What are you up to? Fans want to know what's new, so tell 'em!
I took a lot of time off, like you said, to do some cool acting projects and I lived in South Carolina for six months for a season of Army Wives and went to Hungary to shoot a film. With music, I felt it was important that I had a clear vision and to not put something out just to put something out. It had been long enough time [between albums] anyway, so I had to get it perfect. I did some writing, searching and testing of songs before I landed in the studio with Hot Chelle Rae, and we did a song called 'Back Together.' It was meant for their album, but it didn't work for them in the end. But that's the type of music that I want to do, that is the template for this album. For me, I was really writing and taking my time with what I wanted to say.
And new single 'Superbad' - let's get inside that song.
'Superbad' is the lead single from the album and it is a good representation as to what the rest of album sounds like. It has simple production, a retro vibe, was recorded with live guitars and live bass, has clean simple vocals and a throwback flair. I think it is a fun and fresh-sounding song.
Some fans might be curious why you stopped amid promoting that single "Shake."
There was a lot of stuff happening behind the curtain, and it might not be fun to talk about it, but there were creative differences. Once Hollywood Records' head stepped down, we got to a juncture where it was time to go separate ways. It was completely and totally amicable and I have the utmost love for the label. This is a good time to do things on my own. I am feeling sense of mastery and I have put my 10,000 hours in. I know what I am doing at this point.
You sure have and you sure do. It's shameless plug time! Go ahead.
July 22 is the release date for In Technicolor and then I am doing an ABC Family comedy called Young and Hungry, airing in late June. I am in two or three episodes as a guest star.
And that, friends, is what Jesse McCartney is up to! We're GLAD he is BACK!
Will you get down with Jesse McCartney and his new music this summer? You better.
