ARTISTdirect has teamed up with RJ Comer of Dance Hall Pimps to premiere his new holiday song "It Won't Be Christmastime ('Round Here)," which we are also offering as a free download.
Consider this our gift to you, dear reader. Happy Thanksgiving!
"I remember being sad at Christmastime, feeling lonely or longing for someone who wasn't there," Comer told us. "It's tough when all around you everyone else is celebrating... it feels like you're standing outside on a cold snowy night, looking through a window into a warm house filled with happy people."
He continued, "I didn't begrudge them their happiness, but I couldn't share in it. At those times, the sad Christmas songs comforted me. So when I sat down to write a Christmas song, I wrote a sad one. I hope it comforts anyone feeling blue or lonesome. You're not invisible. There's nothing wrong with you; just hang on until January."
Not all holiday jams have to be happy, since life isn't always presents, eggnog and joy, even during the holiday season. Seasonal affect is often at play, and non-festive moods are not limited to the calendar outside of holiday time.
If you were unfamiliar with RJ Comer prior to hearing this track, here's a refresher. He is a city boy with swamp water in his veins, and he's the frontman and primary songwriter of the rootsy rock band Dance Hall Pimps, which boasts commanding vocals, sharp and spicy guitars, wailing horns and organs. Dance Hall Pimps rose from the Los Angeles underground scene in 2010.
"It Won't Be Christmastime ('Round Here)" is also dedicated to military personnel and their families and all the people whose loved ones can't be with them or who are missing somebody special during the holidays.
We love a holiday song with a twist - it's not all joy and home-for-the-holidays, especially for our servicemen and women, who fight for our freedom.
Enjoy your free download. Free music is good. Free, good music is better. And a song dedicated to the troops? Well, that's just the best.
