Daniel Ash, a founding member of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets, is crowdfunding his new album Stripped.
"The original concept was to record acoustic versions of some of my favorite songs from the catalogue, but to be honest, I found that a boring proposition," Ash said about the project. "Also, more than recording my favorites, I wanted to record the fan favorites. I'm a perfectionist and I can't stand anything that is second-rate, so we're doing truly alternative versions of the songs, I really want to go out on a limb with this project."
See! We told you his foray into crowdfunding, which is admittedly "virgin" territory for the artist, was unique. It's based on real communication with the fans, and they have a huge role in the finished product. It's like fans have an A&R voice with this project.
"This is my first experience with crowdfunding and I've found the real-time interaction with our pledgers to be very exciting," Ash told ARTISTdirect exclusively. "We've gotten instant feedback on everything we've posted, the new tracks, in-studio photos, new artwork, and other updates. And the feedback has changed the direction of what songs we'll record. The project has evolved into a very organic one. It's become a true team endeavor. This experience has been such a revelation for me, that the one new song on the album, 'Come On,' was completely inspired by it. If nothing else, the crowd-funding experience, being able to have direct and real-time interaction with fans, has brought me into the technological era, and I love it, I'd certain do it again."
We love that Ash is still discovering new things – it's so modern of him!
In exchange for a pledge, funders will gain exclusive access to tons of perks and will be able to keep up on the album's progress, view the package's artwork, hear completed tracks before anyone else and be privy to other assorted content.
In addition, Ash has made available an array of items-for-bid that includes signed CD copies of Stripped, exclusive t-shirts, limited-edition, colored 180-gram vinyl copies of Stripped, a variety of Ash's original "Bubble Men" artwork, handwritten lyrics sheets, and Ash's own 1992 Heritage Softail Harley Davidson motorcycle.
