ARTISTdirect.com and Los Angeles-based, pop noir quintet Leftover Cuties have partnered up to reveal the cover of the band's upcoming, all-covers EP, Departures, which drops May 15.
The cover image is striking, featuring the silhouette of a well-dressed woman holding a suitcase, indicating that she is leaving or making her departure. Album or EP covers don't usually make us think as much as this one did/does/has! That's a good sign. And the music contained on the EP? Well, that got us going, too!
The EP boasts special arrangements and interpretations of "Trouble" by Coldplay; "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" by Bob Dylan; "Fidelity" by Regina Spektor; "At Last" by Etta James; "You Are My Sunshine" (by Gene Autry, Bing Crosby and others); and "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. What an eclectic mix.
Singer Shirli McAllen explains, "One of the things we love to do as a band is put our spin on songs by other artists and make them our own. We are excited to share our favorite covers by some of music's very best songwriters. We hope you enjoy!"
Leftover Cuties chose the title "Departures" for this collection of personal picks as a nod to their album Places to Go that came out in Spring 2011. The name reflects the travel theme set forth by the album, but also represents that each song is an innovation from the original version – highlighting the band's new and unique twist on the tunes. Departures also follows the band's critically acclaimed debut, the Game Called Life EP, featuring the breakout title track and theme song to the Showtime hit series The Big C.
A limited edition physical version of Departures, as well as a digital edition of the EP, is currently available to preorder on their website at www.leftovercuties.com. All preorders come with two immediate downloads from the release.
With an ode to Gatsby-era debauchery and smoke-filled jazz joints, Leftover Cuties will steal your heart and thrill your soul. Mmm hmm.
McAllen's velvety vocals combine seamlessly with Austin Nicholsen (ukulele), Stuart Johnson (drums), Mike Bolger (keys, horns, accordion) and Ryan Feves (bass) in a way that pays homage to the sophisticated, sultry sounds of yesteryear while embracing the tones of today.
The cover is such a nod to their noir-pop style and makes us think of Laura Brown from The Hours upon looking at it. We love when art tied to music makes us think and come up with ideas and scenarios in our heads.
