The Ian Watkins case, where the Lostprophets singer was arrested on charges of possessing child and extreme animal porn, as well as conspiring with two other women to rape a 1-year-old, has fans, both casual and diehard, fiercely divided over the issue of his innocence and/or guilt. We reported last week about Watkins' legal troubles; he is due back in court in Wales on Monday, December 31. We must point out that he has largely been convicted in the court of public opinion already. The charges are so heinous that people are quickly rushing to judgment.

We can understand that position. We can. There are lots of photos circulating online suggesting that Watkins may have been a pedophile and/or a male escort, courtesy of profiles on some rather sexually questionable sites. There was also a photo of him performing fellatio on the interwebs, which caught fire a few years back; he hinted the image was of his own creation, despite some saying it was leaked from an orgy.

But what we've learned in years of reporting is that you can't believe everything you read on the web, and anyone with basic Photoshop -hell, even Photoshop Elements- skills can doctor a photo. Anyone with a keyboard and Wi-fI can fake a social media web profile. When you are famous, you are a target.

That's not to say these profiles are fake. But we can't prove they are real, either. That's up to the courts and investigators trained to find the truth in these matters.

We want to make it clear that we are appalled by the charges. If Watkins is found guilty, he deserves what he gets. We also find it somewhat telling that his bandmates released a statement that did not rush to his defense; it was very neutral, and we understand that they have to do such, as they likely want to distance themselves from these charges, rightfully so.

However, we must continue to present the other side, especially since several sources have contacted us since our initial news posting.

Several anonymous sources contacted us with information, some of it suggesting that the singer is being set up. Others suggest the situation is the doing of a former lover. There was also a legal source that claimed that just because someone is denied bail does mean it is due to the weight of evidence against them; it could be a matter of defendant safety.  There are also years of online rumblings claiming that Watkins' sexual peccadilloes are nothing new and have been discussed forever. There is also plenty of speculation and hearsay about the nature of his relationships on many levels.

We realize that there are fans vigorously defending Watkins.

We also realize that we must await more information after Monday's hearing. We also believe that someone is innocent until proven guilty.

Until then...
