Peter Farrelly and his brother Bobby Farrelly will direct The Three Stooges for MGM. The studio has already slapped the film with a November 20, 2009 release date.
The film, which has been gestating for five years in the Warner Brothers system, will be a contemporary update of the screwball and physical comedy that the Stooges were known for. It will also take place in the present day. The film will not be a biopic about the men who played the Stooges. The Three Stooges will be constructed of shorts and installments, exactly like classic Stooge episodes and films. The brothers Farrelly will add their signature polish to the already-written script and will direct and produce the film. MGM expects the film to nab a PG or PG-13 rating.
Additionally, the Farrellys will hold auditions to find the perfect comedic actor to play Curly, who was considered the most physically gifted of the trio. Auditions will be held in three or four cities over time, with a finalist being chosen in Los Angeles.
