We’ve officially entered the age of Bobby Shmurda. New York hasn’t sounded this fiery, focused, fascinating, or fierce since the early nineties, and that’s the truth. The MC resurrects the spirit of Brooklyn with gunshots, intense verses, and a booming passion that eclipses the competition. Bobby Shmurda has truly created rap’s best EP in the form of Shmurda She Wrote, and it only heralds bigger things to come when he unleashes his first full-length next year. Not since Nas on Illmatic has NY felt this powerful...

In this exclusive feature, ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino gives 5 Reasons Why Bobby Shmurda’s Shmurda She Wrote is the Best Rap EP of 2014.

5 Reasons Shmurda She Wrote is the Best Rap EP of 2014

    5. Production: The production is menacingly catchy throughout. Courtesy of Jahlil Beats, it’s ominous at the right times punctuated by gunfire, police sirens, and resounding orchestral synths. It assists in the construction of a dark, bullet-riddled and undeniably real vision of New York City.

    4. Personality: Bobby’s got the kind of bravado and charisma that makes superstars. He spits with a combination of confidence and intensity that matches the cool vibrancy of his ubiquitous “Shmoney Dance”. Even within that dark atmosphere, his spirit shines through.

    3. Hits: “Hot N*gga” already went gold because it’s that downright irresistible both in terms of the hook and the MC’s flow and wordplay.

Moreover, the newest single “Bobby Bitch” stands primed to repeat, if not exceed, that success striking a balance between catchy and chaotic. He sounds like the whole Wu-Tang Clan in one as he switches inflections and fires off one line after another such as “You know I don’t know karate bitch. We dropping bodies bitch. They say shooting is my problem bitch, and I’m a problem kid.” The only problem is his peers need to catch up.

    2. Message: Bobby paints a picture and makes a statement within all of this, evoking an all-too true vignette into the city. Just the fact that his story is on tape stands out as thought-provoking and inspiring.

    1. It’s Bobby Bitch: He’s here. He represents the new guard along with collaborators Ty Real and Rowdy Rebel. He’s not leaving. He’s going right to the top.
