When you talk to New Orleans natives, history is split into two halves.
There's the world before Hurricane Katrina, and then there's after. From hotel employees to police officers and everyone in between, that's how the city's history remains categorized. Buildings fell and some traditions crumbled, while others were erected in their place. Thankfully, there's one tradition that's going stronger than ever in New Orleans these days, and it's Cash Money Records annual Turkey Giveaway.
For seventeen years, co-founders and brothers Ronald "Slim" Williams and Bryan "Baby" Williams aka Birdman have hosted this bountiful and extremely generous outing. This year, once again at A.L. Davis Park, the iconic Cash Money leaders personally spearheaded the giveaway, bestowing over 3000 turkeys and side dishes upon the citizens of their hometown with activities for kids including video games and bounce houses.
People lined up around the block beginning at 6am for food and much more. For the second year, the giveaway featured a health fair with everything from AIDs and dental screenings to Marfan and Aorta Disease tests. Encouraging everyone to get checked for health's sake, those who took advantage of the health fair received a wrist band to early Turkey access. Participants came from all walks of life locally, allowing a vignette into city life for anyone either volunteering or attending as an outsider.
Beyond even serving the grounds, a van delivered turkeys to senior citizens in a bus down the street to cheers and praise such as "God is good" and the givers were dubbed "these mighty men of valor".
The landscape around the park shows vestiges of the world prior to and in the aftermath of the storm. Various rotted and gutted houses as well as the Chicken Mart and Carter G. Woodson School intermittently loom around the area baring graffiti like "R.I.P. Son" or "R.I. P. Manny". It's a grim image, but it's emblematic of so many urban areas in the United States.
In the face of it all, the Williams brothers stand like a beacon of hope allowing their home to have a delicious and delightful thanksgiving. They're the real men of valor in this city.
A true local success story and embodiment of the American dream, "Baby" and "Slim" founded Cash Money Records together independently, "starting from the bottom" and tirelessly pushing to build the most important, influential, and immortal indie label in history. They're the biggest and best for a reason. It comes down to integrity and a diehard work ethic, providing a platform for superstars such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Rich Gang, and countless others to launch from.
Regardless of where things sit on the scale of time surrounding the storm in New Orleans, the brothers continue to write their own positive pages on a yearly basis with the Turkey Giveaway. How many celebrities or people in power literally go back to the grounds they came from and do good? It's an inspirational event to keep in mind during this holiday season.
This isn't the only event either. Cash Money Records hosted giveaways in Miami and Harlem this year, and it seems as if their spirit will only grow to encompass even more markets in the coming years.
