Arguably, there are a few heavy metal and hard rock bands out there right now that can stand proudly alongside the best—Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and the like. In fact, heavy music is only getting stronger in this day and age. There's a bevy of bands that have picked up that proverbial torch and continued burning down the world with it.

ARTISTdirect.com wanted to highlight a few of them as they're not only waving the flag for the genre but for musicianship as well.

We also wanted to preface this with a special criteria. This is only a list of bands who released their first album after the year 2000. This is strictly a "21st Century" list.

Without further pomp and circumstance and horns proudly up...

    Next up is…

    Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold are survivors. They emerged in a time—2001—when nobody was writing guitar solos or shredding. Nu metal's hold was still strong, and the budding metalcore scene shed the bombast of classic metal in favor of down-in-the-dirt hardcore ethos. Avenged Sevenfold raised a middle finger to all of those "new" conventions and followed their own individual muse. As a result of their mind-blowing chops, incredible songwriting, and larger-than-life presence, they shot past all of their contemporaries to super stardom with City of Evil. The record's a bona fide classic now, but they followed it up with two more classics, Avenged Sevenfold and 2010's Nightmare. Everything that they've endured will undoubtedly figure into their forthcoming 2013 effort.

Once again, Avenged Sevenfold will prove themselves to be leaders, and we can't wait to hear what they churn out. Certainly, they keep the old guard alive, but there's nobody like Avenged Sevenfold, and that's why they'll endure forever.
