Feature: Faces of 21st Century Heavy Metal — Gojira

Arguably, there are a few heavy metal and hard rock bands out there right now that can stand proudly alongside the best—Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and the like. In fact, heavy music is only getting stronger in this day and age. There's a bevy of bands that have picked up that proverbial torch and continued burning down the world with it.
ARTISTdirect.com wanted to highlight a few of them as they're not only waving the flag for the genre but for musicianship as well.
We also wanted to preface this with a special criteria. This is only a list of bands who released their first album after the year 2000. This is strictly a "21st Century" list.
Without further pomp and circumstance and horns proudly up...
Next up is…
Gojira's 2012 album, L' Enfant Sauvage, stands out as a heavy metal masterpiece. It topped countless year-end lists and solidified the French quartet as a juggernaut here in the United States. They've perfected the art of "thinking man's metal". Sweeping polyrhythmic pummeling gives way to airtight riffs, while moments of piano provide delicate reprieve. Nothing is predictable, and listening to the album is a trip of epic proportions. Live, they replicate that same feeling with wholly unique production and impeccable chops. In fact, they're one of the best live bands ever. Just ask anybody who's seen them headline a sold out show or as they opened for Metallica.
Still, it only feels like the beginning, especially as frontman Joe Duplantier has penned such intriguing and eye-opening lyrics on L'Enfant Sauvage. Gojira are the ultimate musical monster.
