Arguably, there are a few heavy metal and hard rock bands out there right now that can stand proudly alongside the best—Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and the like. In fact, heavy music is only getting stronger in this day and age. There's a bevy of bands that have picked up that proverbial torch and continued burning down the world with it.

ARTISTdirect.com wanted to highlight a few of them as they're not only waving the flag for the genre but for musicianship as well.

We also wanted to preface this with a special criteria. This is only a list of bands who released their first album after the year 2000. This is strictly a "21st Century" list.

As far as storytelling goes in heavy music, nobody can best Mastodon. The narratives in Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye are as timeless as the music is. That's saying a lot because the music is so powerful. There's a cinematic undercurrent that makes the songs come to life vividly and vibrantly. Given that ability, the boys were even enlisted to help score Jonah Hex.

They're an instrumental powerhouse too. Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher are two of the genre's most intriguing and innovative guitarists ever. Brann Dailor's drumming is utterly monstrous, and Troy Sanders's voice remains beautifully commanding. The Hunter saw every element reach a new plateau, and they elevated the genre again.

Their next album, due out later this year, is going to be a beast…
