Arguably, there are a few heavy metal and hard rock bands out there right now that can stand proudly alongside the best—Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, and the like. In fact, heavy music is only getting stronger in this day and age. There's a bevy of bands that have picked up that proverbial torch and continued burning down the world with it.
ARTISTdirect.com wanted to highlight a few of them as they're not only waving the flag for the genre but for musicianship as well.
We also wanted to preface this with a special criteria. This is only a list of bands who released their first album after the year 2000. This is strictly a "21st Century" list.
Without further pomp and circumstance and horns proudly up...

Trivium's evolution was palpable on 2011's phenomenal In Waves. They crafted a landmark album that illuminated their prowess, while pushing them into another realm altogether. It's a complex emotional trip that's worth taking over and over again, and it builds brilliantly upon Shogun, The Crusade, and Ascendancy. They hit the studio with Disturbed and Device main man David Draiman behind the board for their 2013 album. Given his guidance and their own impressive growth, it's bound to be one of the best metal records of the year.
