These oddly prophetic lyrics to the 90s classic Full House opening theme song ring oh so true nowadays...
"What ever happened to predictability? The milk man, the paper boy, evening T.V. You miss your old familar friends, but waiting just around the bend. Everywhere you look (everywhere) There's a heart (there's a heart) A hand to hold on to. Everywhere you look (everywhere). There's a face of somebody who needs you.
In a time when family gatherings notoriously feature each member siloed to his or her smart phone, everyone is strangely isolated. Entertainment went from the "evening TV" to the anytime anywhere personalized streaming of Netflix watching on your iPad with your ear-buds in. Music went from being huddled around a record player, then booming radio from speakers, to individualized listening to your own playlist with your own headphones. We could go on.
Next weekend, September 13, we encourage you to do two things as a family. First, go to a movie and share the collective theater experience of The Family. Second, listen to this playlist together with your family either in your car, in your living room, or even via Skype or Facetime while your family chats remotely scattered around the country or world...
Check out the seven best songs about family in honor of Relativity Media's The Family!
1. This Song is for... The Whole Extended Family (awkward aunts and uncles included)-
"We Are Family" by Sister Sledge
LYRICS: "Can they be that close Just let me state for the record We're giving love in a family dose"
This sweet soul anthem invites the whole family to unite and get up and sing. It’s fun a sweet and a “family Jewel” that knits even the most extraneous of family members together under the blanket of family loyalty. You'll dread the family picnic a little less with this as the soundtrack—and a big bottle of wine...
2. This Song is for... The Parents -
“Cats in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin
Lyrics: When you comin' home, Dad I don't know when, but we'll get together then You know we'll have a good time then...
This seventies classic is a cautionary story that is particularly relevant in this day in age, when it’s so tempting to throw your kid in front of the iPad and let him roam for hours while you email on your iPhone. It’s a reminder to get out there and do something. The memories we share matter the most. Well said, Harry.
3. This Song is for... THE MOTHER and DAUGHTER
"I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack
Lyrics: Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone
We know this is oozingly sappy, and delightfully corny, but don’t resist it... like “Terms of Endearment” it’s a tear jerker if you let it be. This song has undoubtedly made moms everywhere drop a tear reminiscing seeing her daughter in their first theater performance, get ready for her first date, or wave goodbye on her first day of her college freshman year. My mom still cries along to it!
4. This Song is for... The typical DADDY & DAUGHTER –
"Daughters" – John Mayer
Lyrics: Oh, you see that skin? It's the same she's been standing in Since the day she saw him walking away Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made
In a time when "Daddy Issues" is a regularly used term coined to describe the taint that spills into a daughter’s adult life due to an absent or ambivalent father figure, this song couldn’t be more relevant.
5. This Song is for... The unconventional DADDY & DAUGHTER–
“Hailey’s Song” by Eminem
Lyrics: “But when I see my baby Suddenly I'm not crazy It all makes sense when I look into her eyes”
I know it may seem like we’re reaching here, but this song is a reminder to us all of the unparalleled capability that a little daughter has upon softening even the hardest of shells and drawing vulnerability out of the driest of men. It's also a little easier to swallow than "'97 Bonnie and Clyde" when Em and Hailey took Kim "swimming"…albeit, that may fit The Family better. We had to go there!
6. This Song is for... The HUSBAND to WIFE –
"My Girl" - The Temptations
Lyrics: “I don't need no money, fortune or fame. I've got all the riches, baby, one man can claim”
This little nugget is diamond in the rough amidst the bills, laundry, appointments, and logistical splendor of family life and reminds the parents of the two little love birds that are buried by the stresses of daily life, but ultimately are what brought the family together.
7. This Song is for... The Grandpa to Grandkids
"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
Lyrics: I hear babies cry, I watch them grow, They'll learn much more, Than I'll ever know. And I think to myself, What a wonderful world.
It’s the perfect song for a moment between a Grandpa and his little ones, and forges an opportunity to bestow the ole Pops’ wisdom or delve into a juicy story of the past.
So next time you’re in the same room as your family but feeling completely isolated and disconnected, take a minute to suggest you all have a collective listening experience to the best “Family” songs you can think of … heed FULL HOUSE’s message in the lyrics …
