"There’s only a few things I really care about in life - My body, my pad, my ride, my family, my church, my boys, my girls, and my porn."
-Jon Martello (Don Jon)
In a time when the acronym "GTL" has become synonymous with the Jersey lifestyle thanks to Jersey Shore, this couldn’t be more true for so many of the Frat-boys with an inner guido or even just our average joe’s in the great USA like Jon Martello ... (if you need to urban dictionary GTL, this article should be a nice newbie entrance to the rabbit hole of Jersey Culture).
If we were Jon Martello, we would add one more to his list; the magic ingredient which enhances every one of the above.
Music makes your workout better, is the perfect addition to the feng-shui of your apartment, quells any car-commute stresses, brings the family together, makes church a little more bearable, cultivates true bromance, impresses the ladies ... and that’s as far as we’ll go there!
However, below we’re going to focus on the best of the music to enhance your workout, and bring your body to it’s best form, maybe even one that rivals the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (let’s be real, probably not).
1. Avicii “Wake Me Up”
With the perfect blend of invigorating soul and juxtaposes the old fashioned sound with infectious new beats, culminating in an enlivening sound that will inspire you to take that last sprint.
2. Pearl Jam "Why Go"
With a groovy choral riff and an acoustic undertone, this song will awaken your mind and body at the tail-end of your workout when you're craving the couch and a crisp beer. Its rock anthem mantra will force you to ask yourself "Why Go Home?" when you're tempted to leave mid workout before finishing your ab regimen...
3. Imagine Dragons “Radioactive”
With the songs' theme of self-empowerment and rising above human weaknesses that cripple our free will, "Radioactive" is sure to eradicate any excuses that are holding you back. With edgy percussion sounds coupled with a hypnotic rhythm, this song is the perfect catalyst to any workout.
4. Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding " I Need Your Love"
This up-tempo gem has a persistent undertone of electronic beats blended with Ellie's angelic voice; there's a simple beauty to "I Need Your Love" that’s both refreshing and rejuvenating and will allow you to push your workout to the next level.
5. Kanye West - "Lost In the World"
This song embodies when a marriage between two musical polar opposites together culminates into musical magic; Bon Iver and Kanye combine for an enlivening and gripping listen, with house and dance music influences and a tribal feel with percussions that build with increasing tempo. With a building tempo that calls your own heart beat to match its intensity, this song will inspire you to take your run from a jog to a sprint with each new moment of the four minute song.
So next time you’re tempted to hit that snooze button one more time, trading your morning workout for a few minutes of half-sleep in your bed, preferring a pillow-over-the-face sleep to some morning cardio –
Heed the advice of such wise men as Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino ...
"GTL" Gym Tan Laundry.
Orrrrr adopt Jon Martello’s priority list and maybe you’ll score a lady the likes of Scarlett Johansson!
"Your body, Your pad, Your ride, Your family, Your church, Your boys, Your girls, and your Music."
Well said, Don, well said.
Which songs would you add to the list?
