Lecrae stands poised to light up 2014 with his forthcoming seventh full-length album, Anomaly, out September 9. Following 2012's breakout Gravity, which snagged a Grammy Award for "Best Gospel Album" and crashed into the Billboard Top 200 at #3 with over 72,000 sold first week, this is a big moment for the Texas rapper. More importantly, he delivers yet again with the music, as evinced by Anomaly's first two tracks released thus far "Nuthin" and "Fear".
"Nuthin" begins with a chant and booming synth before Lecrae declares, "A little money now you all O.G. talking 'bout it's All Eyez on Me, ain't talking 'bout me". He can rip through verses with lyrical dexterity that nods to 2pac, but he also eases back on hooks mid-song with a warm delivery. Musically, the track oscillates between elegant electro futurism and massive melodies. It's a fascinating backdrop for him to roll through as he sings, "Here we go again circles" and "We need something more". As far as rap is concerned, Lecrae is that something more. Ain't talking 'bout nuthin but his ascent through the ranks yet again.
On the other end of the spectrum, "Fear" commences on an airy harmony before the MC shows palpable and poignant vulnerability. It's a versatile moment that snaps into more brilliant and bright bars. Everything subsides over another potent refrain that's as introspective as it is infectious. Classical guitar punctuates the latter half of the track juxtaposed with his confessional storytelling regarding his early days.
Hip-hop and pop culture needs Lecrae right now. Not only does he deliver impressive skills, but his message remains intact. He's honest and uplifting, and Anomaly lives up to its name as a unique and undeniable masterpiece. Open up your mind and heart and take a different kind of ride with Lecrae.
