"There's so much to do no one can see everything...Punk rock in general needs kids to be inspired, start bands and keep punk rock alive," exclaims Shawn Stern.
That's what he and his brother Mark Stern (BYO Records, Youth Brigade) are doing with Punk Rock Bowling [May 24-27 Las Vegas, NV]. With everyone from Turbonegro and D.R.I. to Subhumans and The Damned, PRB is an all-inclusive cross-section of everything going on in punk and thrash.
In this exclusive interview, Shawn Stern talks to ARTISTdirect.com about the upcoming festival and so much more.
How do you choose the lineup for PRB?
We put a bunch of names in a hat! Well, PRB is a party that we've been throwing for 15 years now. We talk to our friends and try to put together shows that we want to see. We hope other people agree and since we're sold out again this year, we figure we have the same taste in music as a lot of people that come to PRB. And we like to find new bands because we know that PRB specifically but punk rock in general needs kids to be inspired, start bands and keep punk rock alive!
How would you spend your day at PRB, if you were a fan attending in the crowd?
But I am a fan! I'm a musician, record label owner and promoter, but I go to shows all the time and while we spend a lot of time and energy getting PRB together on the weekend it happens we mainly just have fun. Friday night I'll play in the Texas Hold 'Em tournament, then I'll go to the bowlers Kick off party at Fremont Country Club and probably go to at least one other show. I'll go see both pool parties on Sat if I have time, then bowl and then go to the festival and more club shows. Same thing on Sunday and Monday. There's so much to do no one can see everything, but I'll do my best!
Do you get to go into the audience much?
Of course. We have a lot of people that have been coming for almost every year and a lot of the people in bands and friends that come I've known for 25-30 years. All my brothers are there as is my 13 year old niece. Lot's of people are bringing their kids now which is awesome. It's also a great place to meet new people and as we grow each year there's lot's of new people coming from all over the world.
Who are the next contenders for the punk crown?
Oh I really couldn't make any predictions. I'm sure there are some kids in a garage somewhere writing great songs, only time will tell.
Devo at PRB is quite special too.
Yeah, we're really excited about that. I first saw them at the Starwood in 1979 and they blew me away. They did the song "Words Get Stuck In My Throat" sung by "Booji Boy" who was in a crib with a baby mask on his face.
Also, you've got The Damned!
Saw the Damned many, many times, great band, great people, big inspiration on me. We played with them at Fun, Fun, Fun in Austin a couple of years ago and they killed it as always.
Why don’t you have Youth Brigade play every PRB?
I'd rather just go and have a good time. We play once in a while, but we want to have lot's of different bands each year.
PRB is sold out, but will you be attending the club shows?
