Slipknot's own KNOTFEST takes over Southern California the weekend of Friday October 24. The metal leaders will perform two distinct sets, one on Saturday October 25 and the second on Sunday October 26, headlining a bill that's literally stacked with the best and brightest names in hard rock and heavy metal. It's bound to raise the bar for all festivals in the United States to come, and it celebrates the arrival of the year's best album .5: The Gray Chapter.
In this exclusive feature, ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino spoke to Corey Taylor of Slipknot as well as members of Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Tech N9ne, Of Mice & Men, and more about KNOTFEST.
Are you excited for KNOTFEST?
Corey Taylor of Slipknot
Corey Taylor: The great thing about Slipknot is we’ve been honored to take out some of the most exciting live bands for the last 15 years whether it’s Mudvayne, Hatebreed, or Mastodon. We went out of our way to say, ‘We don’t give a shit about who the mainstream thinks we need to bring out with us. We’re going to bring the bands we want to tour with’. We’ve been able to take bands out who were more underground and help them get to a certain spot. That’s what KNOTFEST is all about. To me, KNOTFEST is taking a European festival and dropping it right in the middle of Southern California and making people fucking deal with the fact that European festivals are awesome. This is us paying homage to some of the European festivals we grew up reading about and spent the last 15 years playing. It’s giving Americans a chance to see how cool it could be. We’re very lucky with the lineup. As soon as we started talking about doing KNOTFEST in California, people were coming out of the woodwork to be a part of it. Not only does that show the power of trying to do something really cool, it also the power and the weight of what we do and bring to the table. We don’t put our name something that’s half-assed, that we don’t back a hundred percent, and doesn’t hold a lot of merit. That made me feel good. I’m really stoked we’ve been able to put together the two days we have. Hopefully, this is only the beginning.
Michael Poulsen of Volbeat
Michael Poulsen: It's the final stop of our big fall tour, and it really seems like the perfect way to end it. It's a big metal festival. We love playing those and are looking forward to it!
Zoltan Bathory of Five Finger Death Punch
Zoltan Bathory: We're looking forward to it. I think it's going to be the last show we have in America. We're doing the big headlining tour. KNOTFEST just so happened to be in Los Angeles when we were arriving in the same territory. It made sense that we pull together our resources to do it. We were on tour anyway so it made sense. We're going to play KNOTFEST, and it's going to be massive.
Tech N9ne: For the first time ever, I have a band backing me that I'm bringing out on my Band of Psychos tour this fall. First stop…KNOTFEST! I can't fucking wait. I hope my fans are ready for this. It's about to go down.
Austin Carlile of Of Mice & Men
Austin Carlile: We haven't played in Southern California for a while. This is our home. We are going to tear KNOTFEST apart!
Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage & Times Of Grace
Jesse Leach: We are all excited and honored to be a part of KNOTFEST this year. I have a lot of respect for Slipknot's live show and the legacy they have created. I also only need to say two words to describe why I am most excited about KNOTFEST—NAPALM DEATH…stoked!
Maria Brink of In This Moment
Maria Brink: I'm excited for that! It's our first show back. We're going to be on a big crazy festival for our first show [Laughs]. We'll be doing a lot of pre-production before that to make sure we come out with guns blazing. Obviously, everybody lives Slipknot, and we're really thrilled. It's going to be a really high-energy, pretty out-of-control, and awesome day. I think we might be the most melodic band that day [Laughs].
Jeff Kendrick of DevilDriver & AllAxess.com
Jeff Kendrick: I am extremely excited and privileged to be a part of KNOTFEST in the coming weeks. Not only does it mark a triumphant return of one of the best metal bands ever, but it also sets a precedent for festival lineups here in the States. Europe always has such eclectic and diverse lineups for their festival billing. The States have always been a bit behind for these awesome lineups, but KNOTFEST will change that. I cannot wait to see all my friends and fans.
Jonny Hawkins of Nothing More
Jonny Hawkins: It's really exciting to play KNOTFEST. It's going to be a great conclusion to our tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Volbeat.
